Our Schools

The Benefice of Coniston and the Crake valley is blessed to have a number of schools within its area of responsibility, two Church primary schools — Coniston CE primary and Penny Bridge CE Academy — and one state secondary school — John Ruskin School.

The members of the churches in the benefice in conjunction with members from our partner churches participate in a number of activities in the schools including assemblies, collective worship, and Open the Book.

In 2019, Coniston CE Primary and John Ruskin School were federated to form the Fells Federation, and church members also serve as governors on the joint governing board for both schools.

Coniston CE Primary School

Coniston CE Primary school was originally sited near St. Andrew's, Coniston before moving to its new location on Shepherds Bridge Lane, in Coniston. However, the school remains at the heart of the local community and is a source of great pride for residents of Coniston and parents in particular.

The school benefits from being sited at the foot of the famous Old Man of Coniston and the surrounding mountains and Coniston Water, as the children are given a wide range of experiences and opportunities alongside the standard curriculum. The school also benefits from being a relatively small school in that everyone's name is known and pupils look out for one another.

At the last inspection in 2017, Ofsted said that the school continues to be good and that "the leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school".  In addition, Ofsted said that "work to safeguard pupils is robust" and that "pupils enjoy coming to school and are enthusiastic about their learning", and very importantly, "one teacher encapsulated the sentiments of many on the staff when she told the inspector, ‘I thoroughly enjoy and love coming to school.’". John Ruskin School

John Ruskin School is at the heart of Coniston physically but also emotionally. As with the primary school, the residents and parents are very proud of their school for all the right reasons. The school manages to punch above its weight and to be successful, without being glamorous or boastful.

The achievements and continuing success of the school have come about by hard work from the leadership team and staff, in co-operation with pupils who also take pride in being part of John Ruskin School.

Named after the famous art critic, social reformer and local luminary, the school reflects very much its location and local culture. This is demonstrated in the wide spectrum of opportunities and activities, many taking advantage of the location and local facilities. And the School's Vision reflects this breadth of choice while ensuring that the individual is not lost on the way.

“

Our small size allows us to know each student as an individual yet still provide big school success and a range of opportunities. We aim to provide a caring, but challenging environment that pushes students to achieve the very best academic outcomes. Staff and students agreed on the following vision which runs at the core of everything we do.
Our vision is to create a school community in which you can:

Be respected
Be resilient
Be valued
Be ready for your future
BE YOU
