St Mary the Virgin, Egton cum Newland
St. Mary the Virgin, Egton cum Newland is the official name for the parish church, but locally it is more affectionately known as St. Mary's, Penny Bridge. The parish church can be found on Oak Vale which is the main road that runs between Penny Bridge village and Arrad Foot. The church and churchyard are in the left-hand side as you leave Penny Bridge village going uphill towards Arrad Foot.
In the immediate area there are the two villages of Greenodd at the bottom of hill and rising to Penny Bridge at the top. It is very easy to think of the villages as one, especially as there is only a small stream that runs between them into the River Crake — but make no mistake, they are two, separate villages and it is important to know which side the stream you are, and in which village! To find the parish, the most obvious way is via the A590 running from the M6 junction 36 all the way to Barrow-in-Furness. However, as you pass through Haverthwaite and then Rusland Pool, you next arrive at the relatively new Greenodd roundabout. Once there, turn right on to the A5092 towards Millom and Broughton, and two hundred yards to Greenodd and Penny Bridge villages.
The parish of Egton cum Newland comprises of a number of villages and small settlements, including as the name suggests Newland, Next Ness, Plumpton, Mansrigg, Arrad Foot, Greenodd, Penny Bridge and some of the village of Spark Bridge. The parish, and St. Mary's, Penny bridge in particular, are perfectly placed to take advantage of views across Morecambe bay to the south, and the Old Man of Coniston and the surrounding fells to the north.

Electoral Roll
The Electoral Roll is the means of establishing Church Representation for the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM). The APCM is an annual meeting where the churchwardens, Parochial Church Council (PCC) members and deanery synod representatives are elected. If someone has their name enrolled on the electoral roll then they are able cast a vote in any of the election for posts that are part of the APCM.
In addition, if you are a member on the electoral roll you are also entitled to certain rights as if you were a resident of the parish, i.e. to be married in the parish church.

Who's Who
Brian has been the incumbent of St. Mary’s, Egton-cum-Newland, St. Luke’s, Lowick and Holy Trinity, Colton since February 2015. While, more recently, he also took on the incumbency for St. Andrew’s, Coniston & St. Luke’s, Torver in January 2018 forming the Coniston & Crake Valley Benefice.
Brian’s roots are in the evangelical and charismatic wing of the Church, and he is also the Regional Consultant for the North of England for Filling Station, a network of meetings focussed on renewal and evangelism.
David retired from full time ministry in 2015 after forty years, twenty six years in West Cumbria and Carlisle. Married to Gillian and father to a son who is a vicar and a daughter actively involved in youth ministry. David and Gillian have five grandchildren. Spare time interests include railways, large and miniature and enjoying the countryside with his large dogs. David and Gillian are interested in spiritual renewal, healing ministry and faith nurture.
Churchwardens
Barbara Watson is one of the churchwardens for St. Mary the Virgin, Egton cub Newland as well as the Pastoral Team Leader for the parishes of Holy Trinity, Colton, St. Luke's, Lowick with Blawith and St. Mary the Virgin, Egton cum Newland.
Barbara lives locally with her husband Tom, and they are both active and key members of the Greenodd and Penny Bridge communities. Previously, Barbara and Tom had been dairy farmers in the Crake Valley and both come from a farming background and farming families.
Therefore, Barbara has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the local communities and the local people — and is related one way or another to quite a few of them!
